Phyllis,Just to clarify, Youthnet was started by Lois Schultz and did extend to statewide participation, however the NWYS and CLASS Yahoo Groups was intended to be for those in MLS libraries most specifically in Youth Services, but not limited to Youth Services. It was not intended to extend beyond MLS. Anyone out there correct me if I am wrong.SheriSheri Daun-Bedford, MLSHead of Children's DepartmentWoodridge Public Library3 Plaza DriveWoodridge, IL 60517sdbedford at woodridgelibrary.org(630)964-7899(630)964-0175 FAX -----Original Message-----From: "phyllis Davis" [pdavis at sslic.net]Date: 06/23/2010 01:06 PMTo: "'Sharon Hrycewicz'" , youthnet at mls.lib.il.usSubject: RE: [Youthnet] Youthnet                   Actually, anyone can apply to subscribe to either.  It is the choice of the moderators of both as to who is accepted.  In the past, both Youthnet and the Yahoo site have accepted interested parties regardless of their library of employment.  There is a membership fee to officially belong to CLASS and NWYS, so maybe people have not used the site because they have not paid the fee.                Now may be the time to look at the variety of methods of communication and decide if we need perhaps the YS Forum to sponsor and run a State-wide wiki, blog, e-mail group, or something else.  Regional groups will need to be developed too.  Perhaps Laconi’s YS group can sponsor and run one for the Northern part of the state.  CLASS and NWYS are committed to continuing with their local efforts in their regions and I am sure that their counterparts are going to continue their efforts in their parts of the state.  I am hoping that YS librarians will flock to ILA this year and attend the YS Forum business meeting to get a statewide dialogue going.  We need to think of this as an opportunity to reinvent ourselves and try different options.            I don’t think we will end up with just one method of communication.  In fact, we may end up developing a whole new system of them based on common interests.  I have always thought that there should be a MLS Story Time Special Interest Group (SIG) as well as one for birth-three, school-agers, etc.  If ILA or the State Library could provide some leadership on this, we could end up with a terrific statewide network that allows us to share information with the appropriate interested parties.  Right now, let’s just get through the summer.  Youthnet is not going anywhere right now.  Christina is working on it.  CLASS/NWYS will share whatever information we get from her as soon as we get it.  She has other things she needs to get done before her last day, and I know she is doing the best she can.  We of CLASS and NWYS are not interested in making decisions for anyone, just to keep things going in this time of transition.            I am so energized that so many of us are willing to work together and keep the communication lines open at this difficult time.  It will be interesting to see what is in place a year from now!              From: Sharon Hrycewicz [mailto:shrycewicz at downersgrovelibrary.org] Sent: Wednesday, June 23, 2010 12:14 PM To: 'phyllis Davis'; youthnet at mls.lib.il.us Subject: RE: [Youthnet] Youthnet         As I understand the difference between Youthnet and the yahoo group: Youthnet reaches libraries outside MLS and the yahoo group is limited to NWYS and CLASS members.  So, using both program includes overlap for some of us but not all of us.  Inclusion is better!       Sharon Sharon Hrycewicz Children's Reference Coordinator Downers Grove Public Library 1050 Curtiss Street Downers Grove, IL 60515     630.960.1200 630.960.9374 (fax)     the last name is pronounced rice-wits           From: youthnet-bounces at mls.lib.il.us [mailto:youthnet-bounces at mls.lib.il.us] On Behalf Of phyllis Davis Sent: Wednesday, June 23, 2010 11:35 AM To: youthnet at mls.lib.il.us Subject: [Youthnet] Youthnet              CLASS and NWYS will work with MLS to see that Youthnet remains for as long as we need it.  Don’t worry everyone!  We know your wishes.  We will work with Christina until she leaves.  We will post information as it is received to Youthnet.  We also have the Yahoo CLASS/NWYS group  that does include a mailing list that does the same thing as Youthnet, but offers other options that Youthnet does not.  It is possible the ILA’s Youth Services Forum may come up with a third option in the future.  ALA has ALA CONNECT which allows you to network with colleagues across the country.   We have so many ways to communicate now.  It is a good time for us to evaluate and decide what is the most efficient method that will reach the most people and the right people.  The good news is that we now have to technology available to us to network online easily.  We have a huge pool of talented Youth Librarians and paraprofessionals in Illinois that have a great track record of working together.  Illinois Libraries have a nation-wide reputation of excellence.  Let’s show them what we are made of.  Now go out there and have a great summer reading program!!! ;-)     Phyllis Davis Head of Youth Services Matteson Public Library Matteson, IL
